Usually, monographs are written by others about some aspect of an artist''s work. As the title A Muse Unto Herself implies, Penny Slinger has taken a different approach. This book-length, career-spanning book gives the reader an overview of Penny''s prolific and diverse body of work, selected and art directed by the artist herself. Penny presents the work in a universally accessible way with the intention to inspire younger artists. There has not been a publication on Slinger''s work that encompasses her whole oeuvre. With this self-created monograph, she gives an overview of the paths she has trodden as an artist and as a visionary. It is not only the journey of a one-woman artist that is depicted in these image rich pages - it''s also the half-century evolution of feminism, gender dynamics, consciousness, and technology that is encoded in these pages. Eighteen writers were solicited to write introductory text to open each chapter. A full list of contributors will be announced soon.
