This study of the British financial and industrial enterprise in China covers a period of considerable economic and political activity--from 1895, when defeat in war by the Japanese exposed China's weakness, to 1919, when European countries were forced to withdraw relations. Drawing on records of the Foreign Office and private papers of ministers and officials involved with China, the book examines two areas of British policy: the relations between England and other countries such as Germany, Japan, and the United States, who were also seeking to advance their ties with China, and the relations between the government and the financiers.
