Anand's Death of a Hero, in particular, offers a poignant portrayal of an Indian soldier used and discarded by the British army, exposing the psychological toll of colonial wars and the betrayal of nationalist aspirations. Across his fiction, Anand critiques systemic exploitation, caste and class oppression, and the complicity of Indians who adopted colonial values for personal gain.
