Viking raiding bands gather on Thanet to discuss invasion tactics. Hastein, leader of an infamous warband based in Francia, avoids his rivals and beaches his longships on Flegg Isle, north of the River Yare. Hastein's daughter Lindi is anxious to go inland to visit Lee but is forbidden to travel by her brother Guthrum who has sold himself as a mercenary to a local lord.
