He would eventually escape, make his way back to America as a stowaway, but be detained again without papers at Ellis Island. When detained, he was to be sent back to Europe to be shot as a deserter. After completing High School, he joined the military service, enlisting in the US Army for paratrooper duty. He served a total of five years, nine months, and thirteen days on active duty, His last duty assignment was with the 101st Airborne in Vietnam, where he earned a Bronze Star Medal and the Combat Infantryman's Badge among other decorations. Prior to that, he completed Pathfinder Training and the USMC Amphibious Recon training and was a cadre Platoon Sgt for the Advanced Combat Training Academy (Imjin Scouts) in Korea.
