Shame on You, Naval Academy!

The story of the Naval Academy is also enriched by the contributions of minorities who have served and continue to serve in the Navy. During the Civil War, for instance, an estimated 33,000 Black men served as sailors, displaying courage and resilience amidst adversity. Notable figures such as Dory Miller, an African American who heroically assisted during the attack on Pearl Harbor, symbolize the invaluable contributions of minorities in the military. Today, the Academy continues to evolve, honoring the legacy of those who paved the way for inclusivity in the armed forces while reflecting on the attempts to erase the historical narratives that encompass the experiences of Jewish Americans, Black Americans, and other minority groups.
