1776, Medicine and War: Doctors the Battle for America

From a nationally-known physician-author, here is the gripping tale of medicine and diseases in the American Revolutionary War. During the eight years of the war, 7000 Americans were killed in action but nearly 20,000 died of diseases. 1776: Medicine and War is an absorbing, fact- filled account of how and why diseases had so great an impact on the soldiers and the course of the war. As a work of non-fiction, it places Eighteenth-Century care in the context of medical progress of the last 250 years. It is an engaging tour of Revolutionary War times, the medical personalities, and the curious treatments. Doctors served as battlefield leaders and disproportionately as statesmen during and after the war.Written amidst the 250th anniversary of American Independence, 1776: Medicine and War is an intriguing and under-appreciated story of our country's founding.
