#4312

Daniel Mercer is an accountant who makes coffee he doesn't drink, folds receipts he can't throw away, and counts things without knowing why. Then the letter arrives. 4312. Just a number. But numbers, Daniel learns, belong to decisions, not people. And someone has decided that he is next. What follows is not a haunting. It is a *condition*. A slow, exact transformation in which the ordinary world-the grocery receipt, the basement door, the button that falls off a shirt- becomes evidence that the count is still running. The archive does not preserve important objects. It reveals that ordinary objects become important through faithful stewardship. By the time Daniel understands what 4312 means, he is no longer the investigator. He is the *door*. A novel about preservation, patience, and the horror of continuing. The count does not require your attention. It simply continues.
