800

Shanghai, October 1937. A retreating Chinese battalion enters a warehouse beside Suzhou Creek and is ordered to become a message. The newspapers will call them eight hundred. The men inside know the number is another kind of weapon.Across the narrow water, trams ring, restaurants remain lit, and foreign spectators gather along the peaceful bank. From the ruined windows, the soldiers can see a world still pretending the war has borders. Among the watchers, a seamstress searches every printed list for a name that never appears. As four days of resistance turn men into symbols, Lin Zhen and Meilin are bound by three knocks, an unfinished promise, and the dangerous hope that someone will remember the truth behind the legend.Inspired by the defense of Shanghai's Sihang Warehouse, 800 is a sweeping historical war novel about spectacle, survival, marriage, memory, and the narrow river between peace and ruin.
