The book focuses on the media portrayal of Russian President Vladimir Putin and examines the visual means he employs to demonstrate his power, as well as the significance of his use of symbols of masculinity in this context. Alongside theoretical considerations of visual and political communication, image politics, symbolism and masculinity in general, the study examines Putin's biography, his portrayal in the media and popular culture, and managed democracy in Russia. A visual content analysis is subsequently carried out. Five selected photographs depicting Putin in a private context are examined. In addition to parallels with various motifs and traditions, as well as with Russian identity, this allows for the identification of different role patterns and references to masculinity.
