a Hand Up, Not Out

Maudine Holloway's life is an inspiration. She has known discrimination as a woman and as a Black woman, yet she holds no bitterness. Maudine marched for civil rights in Anniston, Alabama, and was there when Martin Luther King spoke in the city. Since age 34, when she felt a call to help her community, she has started and led several Methodist Church agencies to help others create better lives for themselves. Serving on almost every non-profit board in Anniston, Maudine has helped bring health care to the poor, provide clothes, groceries, furniture, and toys, and pay utility bills year after year for the needy. Throughout her more than 50 years of working full time, she hardly ever received a paycheck she didn't put back into the agencies. Reverend Dale Clem tells Maudine's exemplary story of service with passion and verve. As a timely tale for our troubled times, A Hand Up, Not a Hand Out is the perfect read to renew our faith in humanity.
