A Pragmatic Analysis of Impoliteness Strategies in Tennessee Williams': Streetcar Named Desire, with Reference to Culpeper Model (2005)

This book investigates impoliteness in Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire. Its major aim is to identify the strategies of impoliteness employed by the characters of the play, with reference to Culpeper's (2005) model of impoliteness strategies. Besides, it highlights how these characters respond to such offensive situations according to Bousfield's (2008) model of response options to impoliteness. It tries to discover whether there is any difference between male and female characters in utilizing such strategies or not. In addition, it states the dominant factors that influence their use of impoliteness strategies. With the aim of giving additional dimension in understanding the play under consideration, the present study adopts an eclectic approach. Employing a mixed methods approach, the findings of this study reveal that positive impoliteness is the most widely utilized strategy, with the percentage of (31.1 %). The data analysis brings out that female characters, with the percentage of (57.04%), tend to use impoliteness strategies more than male characters, with the percentage of (42.95%).
