The Old Testament book of Zechariah has often been interpreted as if it was a New Testament book about Jesus Christ. However, the question that should be asked of every paragraph and every verse is this, "What did YHWH's word given to Zechariah mean to Zechariah and his readers?" This commentary follows the rule "The Old Testament Scripture had meaning for the Old Testament peoples without the addition of information revealed only in the New Testament Scripture." Then, if the New Testament makes an application of God's Word in Zechariah, an interpretation is made that is applicable to New Testament times. That way exegetical and eschatological fantasies are avoided that corrupt many interpretations of the Old Testament revelation.
