Access Cavity Preparation

Endodontics is the branch of dentistry which deals with diseases of dental pulp and peri-radicular tissues. En is a Greek word for "inside" and odont is a Greek word for "tooth". A thorough understanding of the complexity of the root canal system is essential.The endodontic triad consists of biomechanical preparation, microbial control and complete obturation of canal space.(2) In order to achieve the goals of this triad, proper access to canal orifices is necessary, which is the foundation of pyramid of endodontic treatment.(3) The primary goal of endodontic therapy is removal of pathologic debris and micro-organisms from the root canal system and preventing the possibility of reinfection.An Endodontic access cavity (EAC) is the first and one of the most important steps of root canal treatment as it will influence the subsequent steps and outcome of the treatment.Before initiating the access preparation, THINK, VISUALIZE and PLAN to more effectively execute a predictably successful result.
