Ageing, Nutrition and Functional Health: Insights from Institutional Community Settings

Population Ageing has emerged as a significant public health concern, with the health status of elderly individuals serving as a key determinant of overall societal well-being. Among the geriatric populations, malnutrition and fragility are recognized as prevalent and crucial conditions that adversely affect Quality of Life (QOL) and functional independence. The Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) scale has been used to assess the risk of malnutrition in elderly individuals. The functional status can be assessed by various tools - Index of Independence in Activities of Daily Living (ADL) and Lawton-Browdy Instrumental Activities of Daily Living Scale (IADL). The need for comprehensive geriatric care approaches that integrate nutritional assessment, functional evaluations, and educational interventions to improve health outcomes in the elderly population is evident.
