Is it possible-with the constraints of the health care system, with the horrors of a new viral pandemic-to love one's patients and to love practicing medicine? Through linked essays-interwoven with poems-Air Fairy, Dragon, and Rockstar depicts work as a physician during the COVID-19 pandemic at a Tribal-owned inner city clinic in Salt Lake City. The patients-refugees, unhoused, poor, and often very sick-are both medically and socially complex. The essays navigate through the pandemic, its death and uncertainty, and also through the narrator's past filled with similar death and uncertainty.
