Dear reader, this book is a window into my world. Of all the addictions I encountered across twenty years of substance abuse, alcohol has been the greatest struggle of my life. The first section explores humanity's long and complex relationship with alcohol - the most ubiquitous substance in history - from its ancient origins to its modern role as a global force, shaping cultures, economies, and societies. The second part examines the mechanics of addiction. It looks at the heavy toll alcohol levies on the individual and the world, and asks the most important question: how do we begin to repair what has been broken? Finally, the story turns inward. From early trauma to the sensory overload of undiagnosed autism, I was thrown into a cycle of alcohol use that lasted eighteen years. This is a story of addiction and recovery. We don't just drink to get drunk. We drink to numb the anxiety of being alive. To be free, we must learn to embrace it.
