Published anonymously in 1741, Henry Fielding's *An Apology for the Life of Mrs. Shamela Andrews* is a brilliantly compressed parody of Samuel Richardson's immensely popular *Pamela*. It appropriates the epistolary form and the rhetoric of feminine virtue only to expose their theatricality: Shamela's celebrated chastity becomes a calculated strategy for securing marriage, money, and social advancement, while her lover, Mr. Booby, is less a romantic hero than a participant in a mutually profitable deception. Through comic letters, exaggerated moralizing, and pointed narrative intrusions, Fielding satirizes sentimental fiction, religious cant, class aspiration, and the unstable relationship between literary representation and moral truth. The work belongs to the Augustan tradition of wit and satire, while also anticipating the self-conscious, socially expansive English novel.
