Salivary glands are specialized exocrine organs essential for maintaining oral and systemic health through the secretion of saliva, which facilitates lubrication, digestion, taste perception, antimicrobial defense, and preservation of oral tissues. This review comprehensively describes the anatomy of the major (parotid, submandibular, and sublingual) and minor salivary glands, emphasizing their gross anatomy, histological organization, embryological development, vascular supply, lymphatic drainage, innervation, and functional characteristics. Particular attention is given to the parotid gland because of its intricate anatomical relationship with the facial nerve and its surgical significance. The review also synthesizes current literature on anatomical variations, imaging modalities, regenerative biology, and contemporary surgical approaches relevant to salivary gland disorders. A thorough understanding of salivary gland anatomy is fundamental for accurate diagnosis, safe surgical intervention, and effective management of inflammatory, obstructive, and neoplastic diseases, while also supporting advances in regenerative medicine and clinical research.
