Angels and Beasts

The horn of a white rhinoceros is worth more than its weight in gold-or even cocaine-thanks to a folkloric belief in its aphrodisiac power. When a rumor surfaces that such a horn lies lost on an abandoned game ranch in central Texas, a writer named Cass is drawn into a peculiar treasure hunt by her opportunistic brother Max. Buoyed by an unusually close sibling bond, Cass and Max gather an unlikely band of fellow travelers and set out across the vast landscapes of Texas in search of the missing prize. But they are not alone. Three violent men are drawn toward the same remote stretch of land, each with motives far less romantic. Waiting for them all is Lee, the enigmatic steward of the abandoned ranch, whose own history is entwined with the place.By turns darkly comic, suspenseful, and moving, Angels and Beasts is a novel about grief, longing, family, and the stories we tell ourselves in order to keep going.
