Anti-Poaching Unit-Mission in South Africa is the autobiographical novel of a journey into the heart of sub-equatorial Africa, undertaken by a man facing a difficult existential crossroads. Like a modern-day Ishmael—reminiscent of Herman Melville's character—the author and protagonist chooses not to wallow in self-pity but instead embarks on a grueling adventure aimed at preventing the slaughter of rhinoceroses by ruthless poachers. Under the jovial leadership of Commander Jim Barnett—a former special forces soldier and exceptionally experienced ranger—Diego Trigili discovers the magnificent yet ruthless world of the legendary "Big Five." In the African savannas, however, it will quickly become clear that human beings—and certainly not animals—are the most dangerous predators to watch out for. By the end of the mission, however, Diego Trigili realizes that the true journey took place within his own spirit rather than along the endless roads of South Africa—traversed both by off-road vehicle and on foot—and that another challenging journey, that of adulthood, awaited him upon his return to Italy.
