Elisabeth of Austria was born in Ofen, Hungary, the daughter of Palatine Joseph of Hungary and his third wife Maria Dorothea of Württemberg. Her paternal grandparents were Leopold II, Holy Roman Emperor and Maria Luisa of Spain. Her maternal grandparents were Duke Louis of Württemberg and Henriette of Nassau-Weilburg. Maria Luisa was a daughter of King Charles III of Spain and Maria Amalia of Saxony. Ludwig Friedrich Alexander was a younger son of Friedrich II Eugen, Duke of Württemberg and Sophia Dorothea of Brandenburg-Schwedt. He was brother to both Frederick I of Württemberg and Sophia Dorothea of Württemberg, Empress consort of Paul I of Russia
