Arms and the Man

Plato's Ion is a rhapsodist who specialises in reciting Homer's epic poems. Despite his reputation as a master performer, Ion is portrayed as being rather one-dimensional and lacking in depth. Plato uses this character to explore the nature of inspiration and the role of the artist in society. He argues that true inspiration comes from the gods and that artists are merely vessels through which divine messages are conveyed. Plato uses his trademark Socratic method to challenge Ion's assumptions and expose the limitations of his worldview.
