Arrested by Analogy: The murder of Meredith Kercher

We are in Perugia, on November 1, 2007. Near the medieval gate known as Porta Sant'Angelo, the landline phone of a family living on Via Sperandio rings. A stranger warns the mother not to flush the toilet, claiming that a bomb has been hidden inside. Alarmed, she calls the police. A bomb squad is sent to the house, but after searching, they determine the threat is false. The next day, the same family discovers two mobile phones in their garden. At first, they assume the devices were accidentally left behind by police officers during the previous evening's search. However, when the mother contacts the police again, it becomes clear that the phones do not belong to them. She is asked to bring the devices to the police station. By examining the SIM cards, investigators trace one phone to a British user. The other, an Italian SIM, is registered to Filomena Romanelli, who lives at Via della Pergola 7. Since the name means nothing to the family, on November 2 the police commissioner sends two officers to the address to find out how the phones ended up in the garden. When they arrive, they find a young couple: Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito, who appear surprised by their presence. During the conversation, the officers learn that the SIM card registered to Romanelli is actually used by her English roommate, Meredith Kercher. Moments later, Kercher is found dead in her bedroom. The investigation that follows leads to the arrest of Knox and Sollecito. A few days later, Knox accuses her employer, Patrick Lumumba Diya, of involvement in the crime. Lumumba is arrested at his home in front of his partner and their one-year-old son. Though innocent, Patrick spends two weeks behind bars in Perugia while his name is dragged through the mud by media outlets around the world. This is Patrick's story.
