Bol In this book, the author assesses the adoption of new varieties of the main food crops grown in the two chiefdoms of the Kalehe territory in the DRC. The crops studied are cassava, banana, maize, sweet potato, and beans. The findings suggest to researchers that plant breeding, in conjunction with tropical agriculture, has already met some of humanity's food needs. However, significant challenges remain in order to feed the approximately 9.6 billion people expected to inhabit the Earth by 2050. Farmers need breeders to provide plants that combine, in a single plant, the maximum number of favorable genes for the various traits they prefer. Furthermore, the ministry responsible for agriculture must make efforts to ensure that the genetic progress achieved by breeders reaches even the smallest farmer, by involving various stakeholders in the process.
