The Congo is a forested country whose population is heavily concentrated in the urbanised southern region. Forests and savannah account for 65 per cent and 35 per cent of the national territory respectively. Forest cover is highly patchy and heterogeneous, comprising dryland forests (45 per cent of the territory) and flooded forests in the Congolese Basin (20 per cent). In total, the forest covers nearly 22 million hectares and plays a major ecological and socio-economic role (De Wasseige et al., 2010). Naturally diverse, it is characterised by remarkable biological richness and a variety of landscapes. According to the Congolese Agency for Wildlife and Protected Areas (ACFAP), the network currently comprises 18 protected areas covering approximately 11 per cent of the national territory. However, the sustainable development of the Dimonika Biosphere Reserve (RBD) necessarily requires an assessment of the effectiveness of its management, with a view to the periodic evaluation of biosphere reserves by the International Coordinating Council of the MAB Programme (CIC).
