Astrology. Andrea Argoli. Qualities, vices and diseases of the soul: PTOLEMÆUS PARVUS IN GENETHLIACIS JUNCTUS ARABIBUS - with 19 Argolian Annotations: 1

This essay is dedicated to Andrea Argoli, a seventeenth-century mathematician, astronomer, and astrologer, and a central figure in Italian scientific culture between Rome, Padua, and Venice. Born in Tagliacozzo in 1570 and active in an age marked by the debate between Ptolemaic tradition, the new astronomy, religious authority, and the crisis of judicial astrology, Argoli represents one of the last great attempts to preserve astrology within the sphere of legitimate disciplines, alongside mathematics, medicine, natural philosophy, and astronomy. The volume presents an english translation of Chapters XVI and XVII of the second book of the *Ptolemæus parvus in genethliacis junctus arabibus*, a work in which Argoli addresses the qualities of the soul, the mind, vices, and diseases of the soul from the perspective of traditional astrology. The text leads the reader into the heart of an ancient and Renaissance conception of the human being, in which the body, temperament, inclinations, inner faculties, and moral dispositions are interpreted within a cosmological and natural order. Alongside the translation, the essay offers a historical and cultural introduction devoted to the role of astrology in early seventeenth-century Italy, the biographical figure of Andrea Argoli, his relationship with the university milieu, the science of his age, and the religious tensions generated by the progressive separation between astronomy and astrology. Particular attention is also given to places associated with Argoli, to the historical memory of Tagliacozzo, and to the complex reception of his work. The volume is completed by nineteen Argolian annotations drawn from Book I of the *Ptolemæus parvus*, devoted to several fundamental themes of classical astrology: the signs of the Zodiac, the planets, aspects, dignities, fixed stars, domiciles, houses, the Moon's defluxions, planetary conjunctions, the rectification of nativities, conception, the celestial figure, and the length of life. The work is intended for scholars, enthusiasts, and readers interested in the history of astrology, the astrological tradition, the scientific culture of the Renaissance and the early seventeenth century, as well as for those wishing to approach ancient astrological sources.
