In three stages, we will try to make a reading of the narrative of Jn 19:25-27 that takes into account the overall context of the Fourth Gospel and its strong symbolic content. In the first stage, a brief summary will be given of the various interpretations of the text throughout the historical stages of theology. Subsequently, the identities of the main characters in the scene will be constructed, taking into account their various appearances throughout the Gospel. Lastly, we will analyze the surrender that took place at the foot of the cross (Mother of Jesus to the Beloved Disciple and vice versa) in order to grasp its implications for the understanding of the Covenant and, consequently, for the identity of the community of faith.
