Fear is an emotion shaped by millions of years of evolution. It serves an adaptive function aimed at preserving the individual and the species -- prompting flight, the search for protection, or the avoidance of harm. In itself, it cannot be considered pathological; however, depending on its intensity, duration, or inappropriateness to the circumstances, it can become dysfunctional, leading to phobias and anxiety disorders that severely limit daily life. There are two basic strategies for overcoming fear: enhancing the individual's capabilities in the face of danger or reducing the threatening nature of life circumstances. Consequently, both education and therapy play a fundamental role in addressing it by strengthening the individual's resources -- making them feel less vulnerable to adversity -- and fostering a better understanding of contexts so they can learn to manage and transform them, thereby breaking free from their constraining power.
