Aulay Macaulay was a Scottish laird, a commissioner of supply, an inventor, a writer, and the last chief of Clan MacAulay. In the mid 18th century, he notably created a system of shorthand which could be used in English and many other languages.Aulay Macaulay was the son of Walter MacAulay of Ardincaple, who was the laird of Ardincaple, and chief of Clan MacAulay. On the death of his father, Aulay Macaulay succeeded to the clan lands and chiefship. During his, and his father's lifetime, the family suffered serious financial difficulties. Piece by piece, parts of the estate were sold-off to settle outstanding debts. Macaulay completed the arrangements, begun by his father, for the selling of the remaining clan estates. Described recently as "something of an eccentric scholar and a pious individual", Macaulay made several unsuccessful attempts to tackle his financial hardships, the most notable attempt consisting of inventing a system of shorthand
