AUTOGENOUS BONE GRAFTS IN THE RECONSTRUCTION OF TMJ

Autogenous bone grafts are widely used for temporomandibular joint (TMJ) reconstruction because they provide living bone with excellent osteogenic, osteoinductive, and osteoconductive properties. Common donor sites include the costochondral rib, iliac crest, and calvarial bone. These grafts are especially useful in restoring mandibular continuity, condylar function, and facial symmetry, particularly in cases of trauma, ankylosis, or tumor resection. Costochondral grafts are preferred in growing patients due to their growth potential. However, limitations include donor site morbidity, unpredictable growth, and possible resorption. Overall, autogenous grafts remain a reliable and biologically compatible option for TMJ reconstruction.
