A freak late-season avalanche in Maine shouldn't be possible-until it is. When Dalton's Search & Rescue lead Jones Smith Jr. runs an avalanche safety training day up to a backcountry warming hut, he expects grumbling locals, beacon drills, and maybe a bruised ego or two.
