Let's face it, spoiled children are just terrible people, and mollycoddling only makes them worse. It's time to up the ante; let us responsible adults put these horrid beasts in their proper places. Instead of conquest, romance, and fame found in today's bedtime stories, how about the bold, naked truth of existence and how our very grip on reality is just one job loss, one missed payment, one medical bill, or one physical misstep from disaster. For this is life; escapism and retirement are for those of privilege. As for the rest of us, servitude to the unyielding dollar is our lot in life, and our children, the beneficiaries of our deaths, should understand the tenuous hold each of us has in this vast expanding universe: there is nothing. And in the face of such truth, I doubt very much that hopelessness is a thing.
