Bol Bernardo de Gálvez is truly appreciated when his life is studied with absolute objectivity, and that is precisely what this book does: from his early years in New Spain to his return to the viceroyalty--where he would die at the age of 40--without overlooking his time in North America and the unconditional support he gave to the independence of the United States from his post as Governor of Louisiana. After reading about his exploits, we must place Bernardo de Gálvez and his family in their proper context and make clear what he was: a remarkable military leader and politician who dedicated his life to defending the interests of his homeland, Spain--which he always served to the best of his ability--but without being able to separate his actions from his era and his time. Nothing more and nothing less.
