A healthy disrespect for cultural exclusiveness marks the essays collected here, a series of appreciations and explications of writers not ordinarily considered together. Today Charles Lummis, Erna and Harvey Fergusson, and Witter Bynner are often dismissed as paternalistic outsiders or colonialists.
