Beyond Teaching Methods: Learner Individuality and Learning Pace in Secondary English Classrooms Bangladesh (Mixed-Method Study)

Is teaching method really the decisive factor in second-language learning, or do differences among learners matter just as much?Challenging the long-running "method wars" of English Language Teaching, this study moves beyond the search for a single best approach. It argues that teaching methods are supplementary tools rather than decisive levers. Learner individuality-including motivation, anxiety, confidence, and prior knowledge-along with learning pace, can shape language-learning outcomes as much as, or more than, the method itself.The study examines this question in Bangladeshi secondary schools, where Communicative Language Teaching is promoted in the curriculum but large classes, limited resources, and high-stakes SSC examinations often encourage grammar-translation practices.Across Grades 8-10, a 12-week convergent mixed-methods investigation explores achievement, speaking and translation performance, learner engagement, individuality, and pace. By connecting classroom practice with assessment and teacher training, the study offers a learner-centred perspective on what truly drives success in second-language learning.
