Beyond the Game: Pliability, Identity, and Transformation of African American Male Student-Athletes at a California Community College

At the heart of the book is a challenge to the institutional assumptions that too often define Black male athletes before they have an opportunity to define themselves. As Dr. Harry Edwards reminds us, "The Black dumb jock is not born; he is systemically created." Beyond the Game pushes back against that creation by illuminating the intellectual capacity, cultural strength, adaptability, and aspirations of African American male student-athletes. Hackett calls upon educators, counselors, coaches, administrators, and policymakers to move beyond eligibility and athletic performance toward environments grounded in belonging, cultural affirmation, mentorship, academic development, and self-determination. These journeys remind us that the game may open the door, but education, identity, relationships, self-advocacy, and purpose ultimately determine what happens after a student-athlete walks through it.
