If the teachings of Lord Buddha were to be distilled into a single word, "Pratītyasamutpāda" would be their essence, meaning "This exists because that exists" or "This arises due to that." His teachings constitute a rational, wisdom-based, and scientific spiritual tradition, which, over time, lost its original form and foundational ground. It was the great scholar Rahul Sankrityayan who made a remarkable effort to revive this lost essence. He brought Buddhist manuscripts from Tibet, carried on mule-back, and translated them into Hindi. From that vast body of work, this volume presents the second part of a simplified version of the Mazjhim Nikāya.It is often said that if, once again, the entire corpus of Buddhist literature were to be lost and only the Mazjhim Nikāya were to survive, the core principles of Buddhism would still remain intact in their original form.The mind is filled with awe when one reflects that 2,500 years ago, at the dawn of what we now call modern civilization, feudal powers must have held society in a tight grip. Amidst this environment arose the voice of Lord Buddha, which outright rejected the Brahmanical religion founded on discrimination, speaking so boldly before the very Brahmins and ruling elites. Yet such was the power of his truth that all bowed in reverence, embracing his words with devotion so profound that, after his passing, even his ashes were venerated for millennia in the form of chaityas and stūpas.This small book is a humble attempt to present that very Buddhavacana in its original and unadulterated form.
