Biology and Fishing of the Algerian Langoustine: Contribution to study Reproduction, Growth Dynamics Exploited Populations at Beni Saf

This study focuses on the langoustine Nephrops norvegicus, carried out on the coastal fringe of Ain Témouchent, in order to fill the gap in data on its biology and fishing. The aim is to describe its biological characteristics, its fishing and the state of its exploitation over a 12-month period. Reproduction takes place from November to April, with maximum gonad maturation in March and first sexual maturity in females at 33 mm. Males have higher growth parameters than females, with a lifespan of up to 18 years. Norway lobsters are found at depths of between 180 and 550 meters, with maximum density between 280 and 400 meters near coral reefs. Algeria's deepest fishing zones are not heavily exploited, which explains why the associated fauna is richer in fish. Fishing effort varies according to Mediterranean sectors and the Béni Saf region. Analyses show a high total mortality rate, with a langoustine stock at the minimum exploitation limit, requiring careful management. This work contributes to a better understanding of this species, and supports the regulation of its fishing in the western Mediterranean basin.
