Unlike Allbutt, who was addressing in the main those who were writing their theses to obtain the MD, Whimster writes for the young medical scientists who are planning and writing up an account of their research, either for pub­ lication in scientific journals, or for presentation of the scientific material at meetings. By dealing with all the steps that are necessary for planning, publishing and presenting research, this text is intended for readers who are beginning BSc, MPhil, MSc and PhD projects or and those setting off on the road to their first publication in the field of biomedical "literature" or writing grant applications. The text discusses the use of computerized word processing, graphics and statistics packages, and computerized facilities within libraries.
