In 1844 both Missouri and Texas were slave states and in the southern American slave states, blacks had no rights but were considered the property of their owners. This is the story of one young black man nicknamed Buster who came into possession of one of the most advanced weapons of his day--the 1837 Colt Paterson revolver that was used only by one Texas Ranger outfit at the time-almost everyone else carried only single shot, muzzleloading weapons. After Buster's owner unjustly kills his brother and leaves him for dead, Buster gets hold of two of the Paterson pistols off of a lone Texas Ranger who was killed trying to defend the small wagon train Buster was on after he had been rescued from certain death by a Christian sect on its way to Oregon country. Teaching himself how to shoot in the manner in which he had seen the Texas Ranger fight before he was killed by Mexican bandits, Buster goes on the revenge trail in search of the men who killed his brother. Historically accurate in all its depictions of the Texas frontier in 1844, Black Buster is a rousing tale of blood lust against a ruthless enemy largely devoid of conscience. His only edge amongst his mostly white contemporaries are the Paterson revolvers.
