Blasting Barriers: Mitigating Environmental Impacts in Quarry Operations

The book is a concise guide that positions explosives as the primary tool for rock fracturing in quarries, contrasting their millisecond energy release with slower mechanical alternatives like rippers and hydraulic busters, while warning of potential environmental damage if not controlled. The book details impacts such as air-blast, fly-rock, ground profile changes, dust, fumes, and vibrations, urging engineers to conduct pre-blast surveys and mitigations for at-risk properties. It also covers post-detonation effects like heat (a constant), fragmentation, fly-rock, air-blast, and vibrations, whose distribution varies by charge placement, and emphasizes meticulous blast record-keeping to defend against damage claims. As a practical resource for quarry professionals, it promotes sustainable practices to balance efficiency with ecological responsibility.
