The Book of Tongues: The Dead Letters of Pedro & Inês contains the ghost letters sent between fourteenth-century Portuguese nobles, Inês de Castro and Prince Pedro. They have become unstuck in time and space, are no longer sure what tense they exist in, and consequently have become trapped living and reliving their tragic story of betrayal and murder over and over. Woven from history and myth, their story orbits around the moment of Inês's beheading, distorting and transforming all who are touched by it. Oddly considered to be one of the greatest love stories in Portuguese history, The Book of Tongues reverses the narrative, turns it upside down and inside out, letting loose Inês's tongue-the titular organ that has gained amazing and terrible powers for anyone brave enough to hear what it speaks-so that she may shout down the patriarchal narrative that makes a love story of a gruesome silencing.
