Brace Position: The Hidden History, Training, and Toll of Life as a Flight Attendant

Flight attendants are among the most photographed, least understood workers in the world. Everyone has seen the boarding smile and the safety demonstration. Almost no one knows what's underneath it.Brace Position traces the profession from its 1930 origins - when the first "sky girls" were hired as much for their nursing credentials as for the image airlines wanted to sell - through the marketing era that built its glamorous public image, the lawsuits that dismantled its most exploitative rules, and the security crisis that finally forced its real identity to the surface.Along the way, it covers what the job actually trains you to do (closer to emergency response than hospitality), what the hiring process is really screening for (a specific psychological temperament, not appearance), what altitude and circadian disruption do to a body that lives in the air for a career, the historical plane crashes that rewired how flight crews communicate, and the pay structure that, for most of this profession's history, has quietly undervalued exactly the work this book documents.Written for the curious reader and the serious one alike, Brace Position is the book that finally explains what the person standing at the aisle door has actually been carrying all along
