Brenden Barnett and Elizabeth "Liz" Stevens head back to Oak Grove University expecting a normal start to the semester-until the school announces a new co-ed housing policy and assigns them to the same apartment: Quad A, Room 314. Both want a roommate they "don't have to think too hard about," but the first meeting is less disaster than surprise. Brenden's quiet steadiness and Liz's blunt humor click fast, and they split rooms, chores, and an unexpectedly easy rapport. Still, the pressure creeps in. Friends on both sides turn their living arrangement into gossip and "storyline," and Liz-already carrying grief from her father's death and anxiety around storms-doesn't want the apartment to become a social experiment. Brenden, who studies meteorology, ends up being the one person who can talk her through weather without dismissing her fear, and their small routines-shared dinners, packed lunches, late-night movies-start to matter more than either one admits. Outside their apartment, friends and campus gossip keep trying to label them, raising the stakes: if they misstep, they could lose the best support system either of them has. Winter break becomes a turning point when they split their holiday between Liz's mom and Brenden's family, and the roommate's story starts feeling less true. Back on campus, a writing assignment forces both to confront what they've been avoiding: What, exactly, they mean to each other.
