A biography of Albert Camus. Albert Camus, legendary author of The Outsider and The Plague, died in a road accident on 4 January 1960. Scorned and even hated in his lifetime, he is now acclaimed, often celebrated and still discussed. Camus was a complex and resolute man who never compromised on what really mattered, the choice of freedom and the duty to be truthful. This condemned him to solitude and misunderstanding from his contemporaries; he could rely only on his friends and the women he loved for support. To understand Camus better, Vincent Duclert explores family archives, particularly an account of the author's very last public appearance, written by his own great-uncle, François Meyer. Duclert also revisits territories that Camus succeeded in giving a soul and a future: the lands of freedom, truth and courage. Based on a re-reading of the author's political writings, this is a considered homage to a way of thinking that is both French and international, and is valid to this day. The historian and teacher Vincent Duclert is a specialist on the Dreyfus affair and has written a biography of Jean Jaurès and the Dictionnaire critique de la République.
