Cancer biomarkers are biological molecules-such as DNA, RNA, proteins, metabolites, or imaging features-measurable in tissues, blood, or other body fluids, whose presence or change signals the development or progression of cancer. The National Cancer Institute concisely defines a biomarker as "a biological molecule found in blood, other body fluids, or tissues that is a sign of a normal or abnormal process, or of a condition or disease". Specifically in oncology, cancer biomarkers may originate from tumor cells themselves or represent the body's response to tumors.
