Case of the Ticking Sepulchre: New Adventures Sherlock Holmes

Every ticking second brings the British Empire closer to the abyss.A freezing November morning at 221B Baker Street is shattered when the terrified chief sexton of Highgate Cemetery deposits a macabre consignment upon the breakfast table: a miniature, zinc-lined oak coffin containing eighty-four running antique pocket watches. Each timepiece is labeled with the name and address of a prominent London financier, and each is calibrated to detonate. When the topmost watch reveals the name of the Home Secretary-ticking steadily toward a crimson mark set to strike within the hour-Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John H. Watson are hurled into a desperate race through the fog-choked streets of Victorian London. The investigation leads from the sealed, ancient loculi of the Western Catacombs into the subterranean ruins of the abandoned 1860s Pneumatic Despatch railway. Beneath the rushing, subterranean torrents of the River Fleet lurks Sebastian Pendelton-a brilliant, betrayed engineer whom the world believed burned to ashes four years ago. Armed with an unquenchable grievance, Pendelton has turned the municipal hydraulic power grid of London into a colossal instrument of mechanical retribution. With systemic overpressure threatening to collapse the Bank of England and Whitehall into the earth, Holmes must match wits with a master horologist whose deadly equations leave no room for error.
