Around one-fifth of the Austrian population has a migrant background. As the group of migrants of the Muslim faith is very well represented in Austria, the focus is primarily on this group. The hermeneutic section of this thesis comprises migrant statistics and the influences resulting from migration. Furthermore, the festive traditions, dietary prohibitions and dietary requirements of the two world religions, Christianity and Islam, are compared. Eating habits, which are largely culturally acquired, are deeply ingrained in people and serve as a means of identifying with one's country of origin. This thesis formulates the research question and investigates the extent to which eating habits in Austrian school canteens, school kitchens and cooking lessons have changed over recent years due to the migrant backgrounds of many pupils, and how - or indeed whether - different food cultures are catered for.
