Bol AUTHOR'S NOTE This book cost me something. I want to say that at the outset, not to generate sympathy but to honor the transaction - because I believe that a memoir which costs the writer nothing is, finally, worth nothing to the reader. The work of honest witness is not comfortable work. It requires you to return, repeatedly and voluntarily, to the rooms in your interior that you sealed for good reasons, and to sit in them long enough to describe them accurately. It requires that you distinguish between the truth of your experience and the story you have been telling yourself about your experience - and that, when these two things diverge, you choose the truth. Even when the truth is less flattering. Even when the truth implicates you. Even when the truth is harder to love than the story. I wrote this book because I was asked to - not by a publisher, not by an audience, but by something older and more insistent than either. The Voice that I have been describing in these pages has been asking for this book for longer than I have been willing to write it. This, in the end, was less an act of courage than an act of compliance: I was running out of good reasons not to begin, and the silence of not-beginning was becoming louder than the risk of beginning. I wrote it for the people who exist in the in-between - between callings and certainty, between traditions and translations, between the self they were born and the self they are becoming. I wrote it for those who hear things they cannot explain and live in the tension of that hearing. I wrote it for those who have their own vaults, their own rivers, their own midnight reckonings - and who have wondered, in the quietest hours, whether what they carry has a purpose or whether they have been, all along, talking to themselves. You have not been talking to yourself. The Voice is real. What you heard was real. What you carry matters. I would stake this book on that conviction, and I do. To you, reader, wherever you are in the geography of your own becoming - wherever on the map your particular river runs, whatever door you are standing in front of, whatever mantle you have not yet agreed to put on - I offer this book as a companion, not a prescription. Take from it what is true for your life and leave behind what is not. That is all any honest writer can ask. May you hear what is being said beneath the surface of your ordinary days. May you find, when the vault opens, that what is inside is not only grief but gift. May the dream not dissolve by morning. And may you walk forward, even in the fear, even in the trembling, into the full weight and full luminosity of everything you were made to be. With gratitude and in faith, Shakir Torishaq Zaid Huntersville, North Carolina June 2026
